FROM LORI SPENCER

I started this company in 2017 after almost 19 years in public education working with students with special needs. As a special education teacher I never felt like I was truly helping children in the way they deserved to be helped. There were just too many obstacles in the way. Some of these obstacles were large class sizes, paperwork limiting the time with my students, and limited staff. It was frustrating and I became unhappy. I had a dream to be able to work with a student one-on-one, focusing on his/her individualized needs; tailoring a plan just right for the student. There is nothing like seeing that aha moment in a child's eye!

LORI SPENCER

Teachers as Tutors has grown and we have many wonderful new teachers that have joined our staff. These teachers share my dream of helping the individual learner. It's an honor to work among so many talented teachers/tutors! We now tutor students in special and regular education; in all subjects and grades! Since Covid-19, we can tutor online, and yes we still tutor in our Alpharetta office! Further, we can tutor in your home offering one-on-one assistance that is convenient for your family. Earlier this year we even developed learning pods for digital learners offering students and their parents a certified teacher to navigate through the learning day at home. I can't say enough how proud I am of this company! Did I say we have also become advocates that can actually go into IEP meetings with you to make sure your child receives the best plan available? Please call and schedule an appointment with one of our tutors today!

Melissa Berry

I have over 20 years of experience as an educator; including working as a certified elementary education teacher and a special education teacher; as well as my ESOL certification. I have experience in Special Education Resource classrooms as well as Self Contained classroom. I love teaching and love to see students feeling successful! In the classroom, I used small groups and one on one time to support students. I break down material in fun and manageable ways during a lesson. Reading is a passion and I enjoy teaching it.

I have been trained on the S.P.I.R.E program; a reading readiness program. When teaching writing, I like teaching not only content but the mechanics of writing. I have used Handwriting Without Tears for students who need support with their writing. I use manipulatives, songs, and sensory objects to support learning; anything that will make learning fun and meaningful. Another area I have taught is social and affective skills to students; using social stories and games to develop eye contact and conversational skills.

I am a passionate advocate for students and parents and want parents to understand their rights pertaining to IEP ‘s, eligibilities, and Special Education meetings. Being a parent of a child with autism gives me a unique perspective to be able to support not only the child but the parent. All children can learn. I hope to be able to assist your child in their learning journey. Let Melissa be your advocate! Tutors in the Alpharetta office and Online.

Deltric Latham, M.Ed., REAS.

I am a tenured Language Arts instructor, and I am also a professional Reading Specialist. I have a bachelor’s degree in English Education, a master’s degree in English Education and a Reading Specialist Master's Degree. I have been a practitioner of Language Arts and Reading for 15 years. I currently serve as the Reading Specialist and Dept. Chairperson for Dekalb County Public Schools. My aim is to observe, diagnose and analyze the reading weaknesses of each student to develop a progressive reading plan that will enhance his or her skill set.

Shenaz Lilywala

I graduated with a Master of Arts in Teaching from University of Georgia with an ESOL endorsement. I have been using hands-on strategies to differentiate instruction as a public-school classroom teacher. I was trained in the Orton Gillingham (OG) approach as a classroom educator and have been using it the last three years in my classroom. Learning the OG approach was a life changing experience for me because it provided me with the tools to help my students, which I did not have as a student myself. Through the OG approach I can work with students to identify their specific areas of growth based on the Science of Reading research to meet them where they are. I look at all areas of reading such as phonemic awareness, phonics, encoding, decoding, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. I work with students on their specific needs by providing explicit instruction using multisensory strategies. I am currently working on becoming further certified with OG to eventually become a fellow/trainer.

Shenaz tutors’ students in grades K-5 in math and reading in our Alpharetta office; in-home in the Alpharetta, Johns Creek, Roswell, Dunwoody, Atlanta, and Decatur areas. Also tutors online.
